Can Tegretol Be Taken For Epilepsy?

Hello. Last year my husband(36 year old) had a head injury and after that the doctors giving him tegretol. He taking Tegretol 400mg daily 1/2+0+1 (600mg at day),and now in blood is low carbamazepine levels(at morning in 8am was 7.2 , and after that he take the medicine(200mg) and at 1pm was 6.9 (normal is 8-12)),(this is the first time that they checking that). He dont have epileptic attack, but the doctor now recommended 1+0+1 (800mg) daily. Im not sure that is a good thing to giving them more than now, because he is ok. Can you tell me what we should do ? Why would take more medicine if its not necessary ? Is Tegretol cure epilepsy or just prevents attack? Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The use of Tegretol is recommended not only to stabilize epileptic attacks, but to prevent future events. It's great your husband is not having any epileptic attack.

However, the actual dose his doctor recommend is enough to keep him normal, and prevent future attack. However, should keep regular follow ups with his neurologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini
