Can Sudafed And Dilaudid Be Taken Together?

I have been suffering with an extreme cold for 12 days. I finally started feeling better today but I still have some awful coughing fits. To sleep better I have been sleeping with my head elevated and I woke up with a terrible stiff neck that is causing me terrible pain. I took two aleve which took the edge off but I’m still suffering and still coughing. I have a few dilaudids left from when I had a kidney stone a year ago an I’m wondering if it is safe to take one with Aleve. Also, because if my cold I have been taking dextromethorphan guiafenesen and sudafed for a week. I have not taken any of those in about 30 hours. Is it safe to take the dilaudid?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Dilaudid oral is a pain killer of opioid agonist group. You are only having neck pain, which can be perfectly managed with Aleve and paracetamol. So, I do not advise to take it until you are fully recovered from cold.

As the coughing has been persisting, I'm afraid you're going through pneumonia. A good physical examination is required, together with chest X-ray and respiratory function test.

Apart dextromethorphan, guiafeneisen and sudafed, you might need prescription antibiotics. So, consult with your physician as soon as possible is highly recommended.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
