Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My Dr suggested i take simvastatin 40mg. Im female 44 years old, cholesterol is fine, blood pressure fine. Im not over weight, don t smoke & exercise three times a week. I have a family history of heart disease and a coronary calcium score of 5, do you think its wise to take statins for the rest of my life?
Hi, Many heart patients take statins for long life ,which are good cholesterol reducing drugs .They lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
However, regularly i.e; once in 6 months get your liver enzymes checked as these drugs may increase liver enzymes and creatinine phosphokinase levels as a side effect.
While on statins if there is an increase in muscle pain or body temperature contact your doctor immediately.
Regards, Dr.Riyanka
