Hello Dr, My wife got her periods last month(07.09.2011), the flow was very low for the first 2 days.but from the third day it was very heavy and it is still continuing. Its nearly 22 days now. during the 12thday Doctor has prescribed Trapic MF and asked to take a full abdominal scan. After that it was slightly reduced. but again after the tablets got over it started all again. Last week upon consultaion with another elder Gynec , she looked the scan and told no problem. then gave an injection(Prolution Depot 500) and advised to take Regestrone after 3 days. she s taking the tablet for the 3rd day now and still bleeding heavily.. wHAT HARMONAL PROBLEM COULD BE THERE. aM MUCH WORRIED. She is still feeding and my dayghter doesnot know to sleep without taking breast milk. We ar ealso worried whether this tablet will stop her milk and also we are planning for the second baby.. will this make the milk not available for second baby???

Hi,

Whenever hormone imbalance occurs, the endometrium get develops in excess and eventually must shed by way of heavy menstrual flow. A number of conditions can cause hormone imbalances, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), obesity, insulin resistance, thyroid problems, dysfunction of the ovaries etc. Again, too much or too little estrogen and progesterone can cause menorrhagia. Some women experience high levels of estrogen and low levels of progesterone. This can cause the uterine lining to thicken and bleeding.

Generally, Regestrone tablet doesn't affect the quality of milk and doesn't cause any harm to the breastfed baby. However, it is advised to use this medication under a doctor's supervision. If you think that the Regestrone is the culprit for reducing your breasts milk, then you should consult your doctor promptly for medical help.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
