Can Plavix And Venlafaxine Be Taken Together?

I ve been put on plavix today and I already take avapro, levothyroxin, triamterene, atorvastatin, venlafaxine, and levothyroxin. There is a drug interaction between the plavix and the venlafaxine....should I call my doctor even though he prescribed both drugs?

Hi,

Thanks for posting in HCM.

I understand your concern.

Plavix is composed of 'clopidogrel' as an active ingredient, which helps to prevent platelets in your blood from sticking together and forming a blood clot.

Venlafaxine is an antidepressant, which belongs to a group of drugs called selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSNRIs).
It is used to treat major depressive disorder, anxiety and panic disorder.

Interactions between venlafaxine and clopidogrel is found to be moderate.
Using venlafaxine together with clopidogrel may increase the risk of bleeding. Interaction may be more likely if you are an elderly or have kidney/liver disease.

You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience any unusual bleeding or bruising, or experience other signs and symptoms of bleeding such as dizziness, tarry stools, coughing up or vomiting fresh/dried blood, severe headache and weakness.

Kindly take advice from your doctor before you use them together.

Hope the information provided would be helpful.

All the best.
Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran.S.,
MBBS., MD.
