Can Pepto Bismol Be Taken While On Nitrofurantoin For UTI?

Hi! I’m taking Nitrofurantoin for UTI. Is it safe to take Pepto Bismol for diarrhea and nausea caused by this antibiotic? I have taken it at 9 am this morning and still nauseated at almost 6pm. It’s almost time to take my second dose for day, but I don’t think I will be able to keep it down. I do take it after a meal, but am still feeling sick for hours after taking it.

Hi,

You can safely take Peptobismol while on Nitrofurantoin. It will not interact with Nitrofurantoin or does not affect its efficacy. You can add antacids like Pantoprazole for additional symptomatic relief.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
