Can OTC Medicines For Back Pain Cause Radiating Pain From Sternum To Abdomen?

I started having a pain at my sternum. It was strong. And eased off. Started thinking it was gas, so I took something for that. It would ease up a little . Starting today the ache is from my sternum to right above my belly button. I have had people tell me it is gas or could be an ulcer! I was taking over the counter meds for a pain I was having in my lower back. I m not sure if that could have something to do with it! What do you think it could be? And should I go to the dr?

Hi!
Incomplete data like type of painkillers taken and their duration of treatment?
It is suggestive of drug induced stomach upset.

Based on the history given you seem to have developed gastritis (inflammation of the stomach) following the use of Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These drugs are known to cause gastritis, stomach ulcer, bleeding and other problems like kidney disease on their prolonged use.
You need to be examined by a doctor to find out the cause of low backache by appropriate tests like X ray of the spine or MRI scan, etc.
Based on the diagnosis you need to be treated.
Meanwhile
Take a painkiller like Celecoxib which is least likely to cause the stomach related problems or
Take a proton pump inhibitor like Omeprazole along with the pain killer for the symptomatic relief of back pain
Hope this will help.
