Since insulin resistance plays an important role in the pathophysiology of PCOS, which results in hampering the process of proper ovulation, Metformin is administered in such cases. It works by improving the sensitivity of peripheral tissues to insulin, which results in a reduction of circulating insulin levels and better chances of proper ovulation to take place. This would improve the chances of conceiving. Commonly encountered side effects of metformin include: lactic acidosis, vomiting, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and flatulence.
