Can Lorazepam Be Taken While Suffering From Alzheimer S Disease?

my wife has alzheimers and insists she needs no help when I need to do things for her. For example, she has poor balance and needs to use a walker but I have to fight with her to use one. I have to fight with her before going on a doctor s appointment for whatever needs are necessary. Also, I believe it is now necessary for her to move into an assisted living facility, I would move in with her, but she said she doesn t need to and the facility said they could not take us if she refuses. I don t know if she is in a state of denial, which would certainly be understandable, and/or feels anxious about the changes that have to be make to her lifestyle but It has been suggested to me that Lorazepam may be helpful to ease her resistance over time in order to make these necessary changes. I will certainly consult with her doctor but I would like your opinion. Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Sorry to hear of her sufferings. Your efforts are greatly appreciated regarding her illness. In fact the decision to give her Lorazepam here seems a bit premature. We cannot say that she is in a state of denial until that is proved. For this reason we need a psychiatrist to assess her in detail. He would be in a good position to say whether she is in a state of denial or not. He would also be assessing her if she need any medication for whatever stress she has. So in would advise you should convince her to be taken to a psychiatrist for proper assessment and management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
