Can Levothyroxine Be Discontinued To Avoid Hair Fall?
Hi, I take 75 mcg levothyroxine - been taking these pills for about a year now. I didn't want to start them in the first place, but my doctor told me if I didn't I could get thyroid cancer. I do not feel any different now than before I started the medication. I have been losing a lot of my hair since I started the medicine - and it's still falling out!! I want to stop taking the medication, but have been told it's not a good idea. Is there anything I can do to stop taking the medicine and be ok?
Hello and thank you for asking! I have gone carefully through your concern! First it is very important to know why are you taking levothyroxine and how is your last hormonal level under treatment. If hypothyroidism, or under functioning thyroid is confirmed before starting treatment, than levothyroxine treatment is long term but the dose should be monitored closely. If your treating physician recommended levothyroxine to try to reduce the dimensions of the nodules, than i would recommend to stop taking it. Hope the information will help.
Kind regards, Dr.Mirjeta
