Can Lasix And Sodium Bicarbonate Be Taken Together?

my kidney doc wants me to take sodium bicarbonate and wants me to stop taking lasix. I just had open heart surgery, double bipass and mitral valve replacement. My cardiologist wants me to continue lasix and not to take sodium bicarbonate. I ended up in the ER last time I stopped lasix and also a different time when I took the sodium bicarbonate. I am wary of stopping either. What should I do?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

There are no interactions between Lasix and sodium bicarbonate, but you have some specific circumstances that must be discussed with both the specialists. My advice is to follow your doctor's instructions. Discuss with your kidney doctor about your heart surgery and the treatment recommended by your cardiologist. So your nephrologist can take in consideration all your diagnosis and find the best solution for you. At the other side, you must inform your cardiologist about your kidney diagnosis and the risks and benefits of bicarbonate therapy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Elona Xhardo
