Can I Take Endogest In Order To Terminate Pregnancy?

Dear Doctor!

I am on 7-week of pregnancy. My doctor advised me to take endogest 200 once daily, till 12 week, to prevent the abortion.
I have taken it for 5 days. Two days ago (after having sex) i had some brown discharges, and my doctor advised me to take endogest 200 twice a day.

I have read about possible risk of synthetic progesterone to the baby (congenital heart defects , sexual anomalies) and now feel really WORRY..yesterday i didn't take my capsule, but how about the level of progesterone-it may be dangerous for the pregnancy suddenly to stop taking it, after such high doses and can cause a miscarriage?

Please give an advice, what shell I do stop it or keep taking it? I am not sure about my doctor, because she didn't even check my own progesterone level before advising endogest.

Thank you,

Matu.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I hope I can help you today. There are many types of progesterone that are prescribed both during pregnancy and also types that are used for contraception. Depo-Provera is one type of progesterone that is used for contraception that is not recommended for use during pregnancy.

The reason for that is that this type of progesterone has been associated with certain types of urinary tract birth defects in male infants. The type of progesterone that is in Endogest is used during fertility treatment to help supplement the natural progesterone made by the body. Even if your blood levels are normal you still can benefit from additional progesterone to help stabilize the uterine lining and reduce the risk of miscarriage.

It is generally recommended that you continue taking the progesterone through the entire first trimester pregnancy. However, stopping taking it should have no ill effects as your own body's progesterone should be in adequate levels to support your pregnancy. If you have bleeding after discontinuing the medication, you should consider returning to your physician for an examination.

I hope that I was adequately able to answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Best wishes,
Dr. Brown
