Can I Stop Insulin And Start Oral Medicines Due To Weight Gain?

I have been a diabetic for more then 30 years. I was on 1gram Metformin tds for a very long time. My HAB1c has been about 5.6 for quite sometime. Recently I had Pulmonary Edema and the Doctor at the Hospital stopped oral medication and put me on Insulin. 14 units of Atrapid before Breakfast and 10 units each before lunch and dinner and 14 units Insulatard before bed. I have gained more than 20 Kgs (32 Lbs) in weight. Doctor, can I stop Insulin and go back to oral meds? Tom

Dear Tom, it is very nice to know that you are able to maintain the normal levels of blood sugar with meager dose of insulin keeping in mind the age of your diabetes. The decision ton use tablets or insulin in your case depends on the status of your lung function and possibility of developing inflections. If your other parameters are stable there is no harm in substituting tablets slowly and weaning off insulin very gradually. having said this much it is my duty to tell you that the benefit from tablets depends on the amount of functioning beta cells in your pancreas. the easiest way to assess indirectly is by doing a fasting and post prandial C- peptide assay.Wishing you the best!
