Can I Give Over The Counter Worming Tablet To My 12 Year Old Which Contains 100 Mg Mebendazole And Saccharin Sodium ?

Hi. Ive taken an over the counter worming tablet because my12 year old suspected she had worms so I went to chemist and thought nothing of it! The young girl gave me a home brand that was to treat threadworms only which had 100 mg Mebendazole and contained saccharin sodium as well. Im worried now because ive thought about it afterwards and checked up on net and it looks like I shouldnt have taken anything :/ im 16 weeks pregnant and am quite concerned about this. Will this affect my unborn baby???

Hello Mm,
You have given a confusing story.
Is this your child you gave the medicine than how can it affect to you or your unborn child.
If it is you have taken the medicine than it is too little to treat the infestation of worms.
The full dose is 400 Mg daily for three days.
Even this full dose will not affect your unborn child.
In future during pregnancy you should not go for over the counter medicine.
Do care for you and your baby and bring a healthy beautiful child in this world soon.
Regards

General & Family Physician Dr. Kimberly Martin's  Response
Hello coco,

Welcome to Healthcaremagic.com

Mebendazole has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Animal studies have revealed evidence of fetotoxicity and teratogenicity. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. However, mebendazole has been used during pregnancy without evidence of fetal harm. Mebendazole is only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.

Be sure to let your OB/GYN doctor know at your next checkup.

Be well,
Dr. Kimberly
