Can Hyoscyamine Help With Painful Bowel, Intestinal Cramps And Pain?

hello - - I have very painful bowel/intestinal cramps and pain - and have had to go to the bathroom several times the past two days. I have had a couple of gastro-enterology episodes in the past few years, and about 3 months ago had one that required me to go to the local ER for treatment - at that time, the ER PA thought I had a case of either diverticulitis or -osis, which after a later consult with a GI doc, was thought not to be the case, but rather just another flair up of a GI issue. This time, unlike others, I do not have an upset stomach or stomach pain, no vomiting and no diarehhea. Today I bought otc Imodium multi-symptom and have taken a total of 3 pills - - 2 the first time and 1 the second time. I found some hysosyamine in my medicine cabinet and wonder if that could help, as the Imodium has not really helped.?

I understand your concern. Hyoscyamine is a drug that works by reducing the motility of the stomach as well as the stomach secretions. It should be effective for your condition, however, before taking this drugs there are several things to take in consideration.
First of all, you have to be sure that you are not allergic to it. I am assuming, since you found it in your cabinet, you must have used it before.
If you are above 65 years old it is not safe to take Hyoscyamine due to potential risks.
Please do not take Hyoscyamine if you take ANY kind of antidepressants, due to drug intereactions.
Do not take this drug if you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant.
You should know that Hyoscyamine makes you drowsy, so please refrain from driving while under its effect.
If your symptoms persist, despite taking the medication, it is best to see a doctor for further investigation.
