Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a genetic marker that prevents me from taking regular doses of medications I become over medicated I have been give Hydroxychoroquine for this lupus I have sever flare ups that have involved my kidneys and my joints w skin blistering I have had flares that affect my heart Now I am having difficulty walking and standing I do not know if I should take the chance of this medication I am on maintenance antibiotic for interstitial cystitis and get bladder infections often I also suffer from inflammation in my eyes called iritis This is why Im on this site I have a lot going on and I want to know if it is safe to take this medication My doctor is aware of all of my concerns Im just afraid to try another medicine
Hydroxychloroquine is a safe drug and most of the times does not cause any serious issue. In fact, controlling the disease is much important if it has involved your kidney and heart.
The disease itself is much dangerous than the drugs. And to be honest we prescribe more potent drugs if the disease involves kidney and heart.
However, you should start hydroxychloroquine at least. The only major side effect of this drug to watch is eye problems.
So you need to regularly check your colour vision and visual acuity, and inform your doc if anyone decreases.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Mahboob Ur Rahman , General & Family Physician
