I had a complete hyster no ovaries at the age of 27 have been on hrt for 39 years i am now 70 years old and have been off for the last 4 to 6 years. I need something. I cry all the time and do not want to live. I have asked for hrt but have been turned down. is there any help for me
I am so sorry to hear of your distress. The American College of OB GYN recently removed any recommendation to stop HRT because of an arbitrary age. Some women need HRT lifelong (about 15%) to feel well. Usually hot flashes are the continuing symptom. There is a great deal of overlap between the hormones that stabilize temperature and the neurochemicals that stabilize mood. Sometimes antidepressants are used to treat hot flashes. If there was a medical reason for stopping HRT, and not just a number of years, then an antidepressant may help. You may need to find a menopause specialty clinic, preferably one associated with an academic or university center. In the US, www.menopause.org has a physician/practitioner locator service on its website.
