Can HIV Infection Be Transmitted Through An Abrasion On Skin?
My daughter was assaulted while trying to stop a fight. She was punched in the face by a man and the surface layer of skin on her cheek was left with a small abrasion about the size of a match head. The man was fighting with another man as she tried to stop the fight and she was hit in the face by accident. My worry is that if the man that hit her had any blood on his knuckles when he hit her then she might be at risk of hiv infection. I am so worried about this, can you please tell me what risk if any she may have ?
Thank you for query.Do not think of this possibility practically as such impact usually do not transmit HIV and is too rare. Moreover you do not know the HIV status.theoreticially it is possible though rare.If within 3 days of exposure you can get post exposure prophylaxis.if more than 3 days you can get HIV testing with PCR or P24 antigen if in early stage or antibody test at later stage. You can get back to me for any clarifications with the details.Dr Bharatesh D Basti Dermatologist and Venereologist
