Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Fluconazole Cause Coronary Artery Calcification?
I am a 60 year old male, I have been fighting valley fever for 7 months using fluconazole. I have had three chest ct scans with some slight improvement and no mention of anything other than a heart normal type of response. This time the findings say moderate ossification present within the coronary arteries . Do I need to see a cardiologist? Could this be a side effect of my Meds? Or Caused by the really high eosinophil count from early in my illness. Thanks.
1. No, Fluconazole doesn't cause coronary artery calcification [CAC] but is more prevalent in a patient with coronary heart disease [CHD], so it is mandatory for you to check with your Cardiologist or get a Medical Specialist opinion [for necessary examination and investigation].
PS. Because of calcification [vascular] being an old age-related problem and increases in accordance with age thus associated with arterial stiffness and a likelihood of increasing blood pressure changes.
2. Recent studies do indicate eosinophil count is positively correlated with coronary artery calcification and atherosclerosis and correlated positively with CAC in participants with clinical suspicion of CHD.
PS. It will be wise to consult with your attending Physician/Cardiologist for a complete health checkup and cardiovascular status.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
