Can Eltroxin Be Taken For Treatment Of Under Active Thyroid?

Hi I have been diagnosed with an slightly under active thyroid last year and I have been taken eltroxin with 12 months and I felt great after 6 months but for the last six months I have been feeling worse I have gone off alot of food I am extremely tired my muscles and body feel weak and heavy and tired and my hair is falling out and I keep crying all the time so I was told to stop taking eltroxin straight away and I feel worse again plus my weight is going up non stop and I barely eat ... I was on 50mg of eltroxin my eyebrows have thinned my stomach feels sick all the time... I used to be a very active person like doing swimming running walking etc for 15 hours a week now I can barely move... I have always struggled with my weight had severe depression and anxiety all my life ... Would I be better off taking eltroxin again at a higher or lower dose or should I just take iodine... Plus since I have been diagnosed I have had severe ear throat nose etc infections. Please help

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The dose you have taken seems to be more than need still do not stop it altogether. It seems you need adjustment of dose of Thyroxine. Please consult your treating endocrinologist for reassessment of thyroid function followed by needful changes in dosage or type of medicine.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
