Can Diovan 320 Mg Or Lisinopril 5 Mg Cause Bloating And Swollen Ankles?

I take Diovan 320 mg. once daily, Lisinopril 5mg. twice daily, Atenolol 50 mg. twice daily and Clonidine HCL 0.3mg twice daily, for hypertension. I have been taking the other blood pressure medicines for several years. Before the Diovan was added, the only side effects I experienced were sleepiness and an extremely dry mouth. I ve been taking Diovan for several months and I feel tired and experience a lot of bloating and my ankles sometimes swell. Dizziness is also a problem I feel. I also I should mention that I also take Levothyroxine 88mcg., and Gabapentine 300 mg. 3 times daily and Tramadol 50 mg.as needed for pain, for arthritis. I have never had swelling in my feet or bloating problems before. I am concerned that Diovan may be causing these things. I was told that Diovan doesn t have side effects like the ones I describe. Can it or a combination of one or more of the medicines I take cause the problems I describe?

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

Thank you for posting your query in HCM.
Swelling of the ankle in a person who has been having high blood pressure for a long time can be due to a kidney problem. It would be good to investigate for that. Lisnopril, an ACEI and Diavon, an ARB, can cause renal impairment and the combination of the two are discouraged as per the latest guidelines.
Hyothyroidism also can cause bloating and swelling. If your thyroid functions have not been evaluated recently, that may also be done.
I am available if you have further queries.
Take Care
Dr. Noble Zachariah
