Can Cheratussin AC be taken for chronic cough?

Hi, I have a bad cough that I shall see a doctor for tomorrow. I have a bottle of unused Cheratussin AC that was prescribed and issued to me in Feb, 2016, with what looks like a 10/17 expiration date. Is it safe to use that tonight (Jan 19 2017) and should it still be effective? (not stored in a refrigerator)

Yes it should still be effective. The only issue is that it contains codeine, an opioid that can have some serious side effects, especially when taking in high doses. Side effects include constipation, respiratory distress and even death in extreme overdoses. This is something that should be discussed with your health care provider, but one night of the prescribed dose before you go in for your appointment probably wouldn't hurt
