Can Azithromycin And Linezolid Cause Hair Loss In A 78-year-old?

My wife is taking azithromycin 250mg and lizezolid 600mg for the last 3 months and is losing a very large amount of hair. She 78 years old and always had a full head of hair. Can these meds cause hair loss. Her Drs are 300 miles away and she has been unable to reach them by phone.

Hi,

Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat different types of infections. Side effects associated with its use include: diarrhea, dry or scaly skin, abdominal pain, difficult or painful urination, vomiting, ccid or sour stomach, and heartburn.

Linezolid is an antibiotic used to treat certain serious bacterial infections. Side effects of linezolid include a headache, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, rash, vaginal yeast infection, taste alteration, oral thrush, abnormal liver function tests, abdominal pain, and tongue discoloration.

More frequently reported side effects to include: anemia, decreased hemoglobin, and thrombocytopenia.

However, certain antibiotics may induce hair loss by reducing hemoglobin and Vitamin B-complex levels.

In such instances, hair growth is regained by supplementation with B-Complex Vitamins and iron.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran S,
