In general all medications in the first trimester should be avoided as much as possible and use other non drug remedies. However, Avil (Pheniramine maleate) is considered safe in pregnancy & can be used if prescribed by a doctor for the itching problem. Since Avil tablet is known to cause drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation the other safer medication to treat itching problem is Cetrizine which is less sedating. Besides medications let her apply Calamine lotion on the affected area for the symptomatic relief. She should be examined by a doctor to rule out the possible underlying cause of itching and treated accordingly. Hope this will help.
