Can Avelox Be Taken For Viral Pneumonia?

My 87 year old father has been taking antibiotics since the first week in October. He started out as an upper respiratory issue and a Z pack was prescribed. After the Zpack an xray was done which showed pneumonia. He as then given Leviquin. After this antibiotic, at my request, the doctor ordered another chest xray and the pneumonia was much worse. He was started on Avelox at 6 am this morning. His diagnosis is Viral Pneumonia. I just read that Avelox is used to only treat bacterial infections. What should I do about this as obviously the doctor gave him the wrong medication...correct?

Hi,
I am not sure how the doctors have arrived at the conclusion of viral pneumonia. An X-ray can only tell the presence or absence of pneumonia but cannot differentiate between viral and bacterial pneumonia. Culture of bronchial secretions needs to be done to determine the exact cause.
If it's indeed viral pneumonia, then also giving an antibiotic like Avelox (moxifloxacin) is not a wrong thing to do. As viruses cause infection in lungs, there are high chances that secondary bacterial infections to develop due to reduced immunity. Antibiotics will take care of bacterial infections while the body recovers from viral infection.
Hope the above information helps you. You can discuss the above information with your doctor. Thanks for writing into healthcaremagic. Have a nice day.
