Can Atrovent Be Given For Wheezing?

My Mom was just discharged after being in the hospital with a sudden onset of bronchospasméwheezing. in the hospital she was receiving 8 puffs of Ventolin and 8 puffs atrovent q4h (+ 50 mg prednisone x 5 d) She was doing well and was d/c home on 2 puffs ventolin qid prn. I find that her wheezing is getting worse again despite using the ventolin. She is 88 yo with hx of stroke in 1999, Parkinson s, diabetes, HBP. Should I give her any atrovent?

Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows.
1. Try increasing puffs of ventolin to four qid. It should help in bronchodilatation and reduce wheezing.
2. If it persists further, atrovent can be used. It will also help in bronchi dilatation and should be of help.
3. Start with 2 puffs aid. If necessary oral bronchi dilators can be used. Make sure she has no infection or exposure to dust. Evaluation of oxygen saturation and followup is necessary. Control of all chronic conditions within normal range essential.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
