Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mothers doctor took her off of aricept due to her having loose stool. She s now crying anxious upset and acting out wHich she wasn t doing prior to this change. They seem to fight me about putting her back on. I Should I be concerned am I wrong about putting her back on. Plus I have always been told not to stop that med cold turkey. Is that true?
I agree with you that Aricept should not be stopped suddenly but if your mother is having loose stool, it is important to make sure that she does not get dehydrated so keeping that in mind her doctor did the right thing.
Now coming back to your mother's condition, talk to her doctor about starting Aricept at a lower dose. Drugs such as Rivastigmine may also be tried instead of Aricept. So I'll suggest you should talk to her doctor if Aricept dose can be reduced or any alternative medicine can be started.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Prabhash Verma,
