Can Amoxicillin Cause Itchy Rashes On The Body?

Our 5 year old took antibiotics (Amoxicillin) for the first time last week. On the 7th day of antibiotics, he developed a bad rash. He has been done with the antibiotics for 2 days now and the rash is getting worse. What can we do to help him? He is very itchy.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I understand your concern.

Sometimes, it happens to occur late allergy reaction to antibiotic use as amoxicillin in case of your son.

I advise to give him OTC antihistaminic for the rash. If no improvement, or getting worse, should send to ER as need shots (prednisolone) for rash.

Apply calamine lotion locally.

Remember to never give penicillin drugs to your child.

Hope this helps.
