Bump on the back of heel, cannot walk, diagnosed Achilles tendonitis. Cure for symptoms?

I have a large bump on the back of my left heel. I was told it is a result of Achilles tendinitis. It's been there for sometime. In the past , it gets to a point I can barely walk, that lasts for about 7-10 days, then goes away. I'm very active, going to the gym 5 days a week. Right now it's more of a nuisance that anything else. What is the best exercise to help reduce this problem?
