Brown Mucus Discharge During Pregnancy. Heart Beat Not Found During Ultrasound. Is It Too Early?

I m 6-7wks pregnant and have had light brown mucus discharge off and on for a week now. I did an ultrasound and the doctor said he did not get a heartbeat so the baby died. I was sent to do a D & C but the doctor at the hospital said it may not have died as it may just be too early to detect a heartbeat. I have no pains just the discharge so the doctor said to wait a week again. I just need some advice as I m worried...please? Mel

Hello
Thanks for your query.
A pregnancy is definitely classified as a failed pregnancy, if the gestational sac exceeds a diameter of 18 - 20 mm, on transvaginal ultrasound, without identification of a yolk sac and a fetal pole.
Also, if the fetus is > 7mm, but there is no heartbeat seen.
Normally, by 6 weeks, a fetal pole should be seen, and by 7 weeks, a heartbeat is definitely visualized.
Please remember that these findings are based on a reliable, expert ultrasound.
Variation of a few days is normal.
So you need to give me the exact measurements in ultrasound, for me to be reasonably sure, that the fetus is dead or non viable.
Take care.
