Broke Bones In Hand. On Pins And Plates. Index Finger Not Healed After 5 Months. Normal?

My husband broke the middle of his hand ...three bones...has had three surgeries...one using pins, the next using plates and then using larger plate when one broke. The last surgery was oct 2012. The hand is hot and so painful every day. Recently had an X-ray and ct scan . Index finger still not healed. Too much pain...is this normal.
