Blood In Stools. Hemoccult Test Positive. Blood Work Shows Low MCH, MCHC, Elevated Platelets. Have Stomach Pain, Nausea

I am 34 years old and 2 weeks ago I had a bowel movement that had red blood mixed in. My Dr did a hemoccult test that came back positive. I had blood work done that showed low mch, low mchc and elevated platelets. My symptoms are constipation, diarrhea, low stomach pain, excess gas and nausea. I also have episodes of dizziness and feeling shaky. I don't have any energy at all. I have a history of cancer on paternal side. My dad had oral cancer last year and two of his brothers died of throat cancer. Also my paternal grandfather died of cancer but don't know what kind. Three years ago my mom had 3 benign polyps removed. I have a colonoscopy next month. What are the chances that they will find colon cancer? Thanks.

Gastroenterologist 's  Response
Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist (DM).

The risk of CRC in first-degree relatives of those with colon cancer is increased by two-fold to three-fold.

The risk is higher when adenoma or carcinoma has occurred in a relative at an early age or when more than one relative has had carcinoma.

I hope I have answered your query and this will help you. Remain in touch and get-well soon.

General & Family Physician Dr. Vidya KR's  Response
Hi, Thanks for using HCM.

Your blood workup shows anaemia and your symptoms also go with that.
Anaemia could be due chronic blood loss in stool.

There are many causes for blood in stool. cancer is one of the reason for it.
causes are:
Crohns disease
Ulcerative colitis
Other types of inflammatory bowel disease, inflammatory bowel syndrome, or ulceration
Rectal or anal hemorrhoids or anal fissures, particularly if they rupture or are otherwise irritated
Diverticulosis
Upper gastrointestinal bleeding
Peptic ulcer disease
Esophageal varices
Colon cancer.

Better to get complete work up done to know cause for bleeding.
Take nutritious diet, rich in iron to improve your Hb level.

Consult your doctr for examination and management.
Hope I answered your question. Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries.
Wish you good health. Take
care.

Regards
Dr. Vidya
