Blood Flow From The Anus. Hemorrhoid?

5 days ago my husband told me he thought he had a hemorrhoid. He is 33, 5 9 and 155lbs, and is healthy. He was not constipated, and has always had normal daily stools . It seems to have gotten worse the past 5 days. He is using hemorrhoid cream, baby wipes to wipe, and taking epsom salt baths. Today when he stood up at work he felt something come out of his anus , and found blood on his underwear when he went to the bathroom. I know it is normal to see blood when you wipe or in the stool, but is it normal to have blood flow out of nowhere like that? How long does it take for hemorrhoids to clear up, and at what point should he see a doctor? Would a family doctor do, or does he need to see a specialist?

Hello,
Thanks for writing your query to us.

Its not normal to pass blood in stools. Long term loss of blood in stool can cause anemia assocaited by weakness & tiredness. Kindly visit your treating doctor & get examined locally. Based on local examination findings further course of treatment should be decided. whether surgery is required or symptoms can be kept in control on medicines can only be decided after examination.
Take care.

Hi,
Welcome to Healthcaremagic forum.
Blood at any time from anus (even during wipe) is not considered as normal.
Does your husband has any type of pain at anus?
Does he has constipation?
"Something coming out from anus" definitely indicates hemorrhoids while you should consult with general surgeon and should get thorough check up.
There may be possibility of dormant hemorrhoids along with fresh anal fissure.
Treatment is first done by medicines and depending on the severity surgery is considered.
Take care,

Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

Hemorrhoids usually occur when persons have a history of constipation because straining increases abdominal pressure.
They usually present with bleeding on wiping, itching and discomfort. It is usually to have blood loss in the absence of defecation.
Treatment involves use of fruits and vegetables, whole grain foods, using the bathroom when the urge occurs, may need stool softeners to reduce straining, drinking more water.
He is already using the epsom salt baths, these can also be helpful.
In general an acute episode may last 2-3 weeks.

He may want to consider visiting his general doctor for a review because there are other causes of rectal bleeding that would need to be ruled out.

I hope this helps
