Black Eye, Hard Black Bruise, Swollen Eyelid. History Of Fall And Corner Of Eyebrow Hitting Cement. Recommend

My ten year old fell off his scooter and hit his head on the concrete. The corner of his eyebrow hit the cement, causing a huge round ball to raise up. This happened on Saturday. Today is Monday and my son has a black eye, and has a big black bruise which is hard, his eye lid is swollen and almost shut, but he can see through it when he strains to see. What do you recommend I do?
we have been putting ice on it too.

Hello,
Most of the times black eyes are relatively minor which heal of its own in 4 to 5 days.As the bruise heals, the swelling decreases and colour changes from black and blue to green and yellow.
But sometimes,a black eye can be a warning sign of serious eye or head injury.
You must consult the doctor immediately if you develop any of following....
Change in vision
Swelling persisting beyond 48 hours
Severe pain
Behavioural changes or confusion
Fluid draining from nose,ears,mouth etc
Any deformity in the face or eye socket suggesting any fracture.

Other wise do the following
Keep continuing icing till swelling disappears
May take some anti inflammatories like ibuprofen thrice a day
Keeping head elevated.
Thanks

Pediatrician Dr. E Venkata Ramana's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Your son developed a hematoma around the eye due to fall.

But you should observe for the danger symptoms of head injury like vomitings, headache, abnormal behavior, fits, and decreased limb movements.

The swelling around the eye will decrease gradually and you can apply ice pack over swelling and if there is pain you can give ibuprofen in prescribed dose.

And he needs physical examination by a doctor to look for any alarming signs of head injury and for eye examination.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
