Baby Passing Green Stools, Foamy With White Specs Several Times A Day. Remedies?

hi, my three month old son is passing green stools several times a day. He is breastfed and given formula about once in a day or once in two days (whenever he doesn t seem satisfied after the feed). The stool is foamy and has white granules in it. when we got his stool tested about a month ago, the result came out to be Reducing Substance + He doesn t have fever and is active. Can I give him Sporlac? Please suggest remedies.

Hi,
Thank you for your query,
The green color may be normal but if it is loose, watery , foul smelling then may be diarrhea.
Try to give exclusive breastfeeds till the age 6 months as the gut infections are rare in exclusively breastfed infants.
You can give sporolac one sachet per day by adding the powder in expressed breast milk.
If the motions are still loose, watery consult Pediatrician for the specific treatment.
Hope I have answered your query.

Hi

What is the frequency of stools?

Did you notice this change in frequency and color of stools after formula was started? Because many kids on formula will pass green stools.

Reducing substance in stool indicates Lactose Intolerance.

What may be done is- try to put him on Exclusive Breast feeding till he completes 6 months of age- which will be the best for your baby. Get his weight, length, head circumference measured every month. If he is growing well, you need not worry.

If his weight gain is poor and continues to have liquid stool or stool frequency is quite high- then stool tests may be repeated (stool pH and stool for reducing substances). If still things are suggestive of Lactose Intolerance- then he might need Lactose free diet. Soya milk (Isomil) will be use in such babies

At present sporlac is not needed. Try to put him on exclusive breast feeds till 6 months of age.
When ever you feed him, empty one breast completely before you feed from another breast- as the milk that comes later is rich in fat and will satisfy his appetite. Even after that if he is not satisfied, you may feed him from the other breast too.

Take care of your diet- eat plenty of fruits, veggies, nuts, milk etc so that you will produce adequate milk. After he completes 6 months, you may start weaning him on home made foods.

Hope my answer helps you.
Wish your son good health.
