Baby Having Reoccuring Eczema On Face, Ichy. Prescribed Elocon. How To Improve?

hi
For my 9 months old daughter, our paediatrician has eczema. She has it only on her face.
Our doctor prescribed ELOCON. Using this will only supress the intensity, but then will reoccur with more intensity and covering the more surface area. She feels very ichy. we are very helpless. The situation is not improving. Please do suggest, what can be done.

Hello,

Welcome to healthcare Magic

Your daughter is suffering from Atopic dermatitis. Atopic eczema is associated with red itchy rash usually over limbs, face, neck(mostly over skin folds). Atopic individuals have sensitive skin which will develop eczema due to a lot of external and internal triggers. The triggers might be dust, extreme heat or cold, certain food stuffs, woolen clothes, insect bites etc. The barrier function of the skin is not normal. A moisturizing lotion like cetaphil lotion is a must on a daily basis and reapply it 2-3 times according to the dryness. It helps to restore barrier function. Use very mild cleanser for bath like cetaphil sensitive cleanser. Do not use very hot or cold water for bath, luke warm water is alright. Give her an antihistamine syrup at night like hydroxyzine for the itching so that she is comfortable. Topical steroids should be used under supervision of dermatologist. Topical steroid cream might be indicated to bring the eczema down if it is severe. Elocon is a mid potent steroid and taper it and stop once the rash subsides. But you need to follow the precautionary measures so that a relapse won't occur.

Atopic dermatitis requires frequent follow ups, so consulting an experienced dermatologist and regular visits as advised is essential.

Hope this helped

Take care

hi..thanks for writing here.Your baby is having atopic eczema which is much more common these days.Elocon is a steroid cream which will produce temporary relief ,and it is also much stronger for your babys skin,so it will be better avoiding it.Start applying a good moisturiser like cetaphil moisturising cream, apply it to whole body, just after bath and then 2 to 3 times daily. You can just apply mild steroid like desowen on and off ,apply only where there is itching, use cetaphil round the year.use milld baby soap, try her loose clothing, avoid woolen clothes .Use lukewarm water for bathing. If still problem persists then consult a dermatologist .
