Baby Have Abnormal Stool. Had Fruits And Vegetables. What Could Have Caused This?

My daughter is five months old and she's perfectly healthy right now and she just pooped dark grey, almost black with green pieces in it. I'm really worried; what would cause that? I started her on baby food about a month and a half ago, just veggies. Well two days ago, I added in some fruit. The first day, peaches, and yesterday some banana. That wouldn't do that would it?

Hi

All colors in stools are normal EXCEPT Black (tarry black), Red and Clay white (light grey).

The color and texture may depend on the food taken.
Babies on formula feeds can pass dark green stools- which may be interpreted by many as grey or black.
Green leafy vegetables can cause stools to be dark green in color.
Banana can cause grey to black threads in stools.
The food ingested may pass undigested in the same color.

If she is fine otherwise- with her activity, urination, food intake- you need not worry.
If you have a doubt, please take the stool sample and get it checked with your Pediatrician.

Hope my answer helps you.
wish your daughter good health.

Pediatrician Dr. Y V Siva Sankara Murty's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

Do not worry regarding the color of the stool. It depends on the food ingested.

If a baby is other wise normal not to worry regarding the color of the stool.

I suggest you to add one new item for one week. This will help to identify if there are any food allergies etc.

Do not add a new item daily.

You should also continue to breast feed your baby.

Hope this helps.
Take care.
