Are Ulcers In Esophagus Related To GERD?

Hello, My father has been having troubles swallowing big bites and generally ends up vomiting the stuck food. lately after an endoscopy, it was detected that he has ulcers in his esophagus (mid-lower). He has a history of constant cough n cold and also was admitted for excess cough due to some infection in his air pipe. He is 65+. Could this be GERD ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post can be attributed to GERD.
It is caused by reflux of acid from stomach to esophagus due to relaxation of the sphincter at the lower part of esophagus.

Management consists of:
1. Lifestyle modification- like weight reduction, sleeping on the left side, or with upper body raised.
2. Dietary modification- avoid consuming irritating substances such as acidic & rich foods, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.
3. Medical management- Proton pump inhibitors like Omeprazole, Rabeprazole, etc. (which prevent acid formation in stomach) + Domperidone preparation (strengthens the sphincter & prevents reflux).
Sucralfate syrup can also be added to assist healing of ulcers & prevent formation of further ulcers.

So, it will be better to consult a Gastroenterologist and discuss regarding the further plan of management.

Wishing him a good health & speedy recovery.
Take care.
