My husband has been prescribed Amiodarone HCL 200 mg for constant a-fib on 3 seperate EKG s. Echo-gram (showed slightly enlarged upper left chamber of heart) & chemical stress test by cardiologist was okay. This is new condition and he went to Dr. because he was out of breath and exhausted. Dr. suggested Warfarin, but since it killed hubby s mother, he didn t want to take it. So Dr. said Amiodarone sometimes stops a-fib and a-fib must be stopped. I am to take pulse every morning and evening and if it goes consistently below 50, he is to stop Diltiazen CD 120 but continue his Losartan and Amiodarone. He read the brochure about Amiodarone with all the side effects, and is afraid to take the Amiodarone. He is 76, and has had RA for years and takes Humira shots for that. He is very active & still cuts wood and splits it for fireplace etc. Does this seem like a sound path of treatment for a-fib to you? Something just doesn t feel right to us about this and we don t know why. This is also a first for us. Yes, we know that if you look at side effects for asprin, it looks scary too. Side effects lists have never been a problem to us previously, and we ve read many. There are always risks with medication and we certainly understand that. This is just a gut feeling we have with no explanation. What do you think?
