Are Testosterone Injections Right Treatment For Tiny Penis Size In A Child?

Hi, I am very concerned about the size of my 11 year old son s penis. It does not seem to have changed since he is a toddler. I expressed my concern to the pediatrician and he recommended I take him to an endocrinologist. The endocrinologist is recommending 3 months of testosterone injections (1 per month for 3 months) and feels this may help it a little bit. I don t know what to do? I m worried it could get smaller from articles I read. Also so many detrimental side effects as well. Not sure if the side effects are more for long term use or not. I just want my son to have the chance of a normal life and development. People can be cruel and I am willing to do anything it takes to help him develop to an average size. Can you tell me if you think this is a good idea or if I should get a second opinion? Also, is the endocrinologist the correct doctor to help with this issue? He has started to get some hair on his body but not in full puberty as of yet.

Hi,

This depends on the actual length (from base to tip of glans) of the penis and any underlying cause, which I am not aware here. In a 11 year boy, anything above 5 cms is good enough, although this varies among population and ethnicity.

Anyhow, if other sexual features like testes size, pubic/facial hair and voice changes are happening as expected, penis size won't be a concern as far its function is concerned. Also, as he crosses through puberty, size will progressively increase further.

Testosterone treatment is useful in micropenis caused by hypogonadism (where other sexual features mentioned also are delayed), but occasionally used in severe isolated cases of micopenis also. You can discuss all these things in detail with your doctor.

You can also have a discussion with a pediatric urologist also, if you need a second opinion.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
