Are Swelling And Bleeding In Forehead Of A Teenager Post A Hit A Cause For Concern?
17 yr old son hit forehead into corner of a wall shelf in his room that was close to his bed, 2 in cut and then swelling. Blood stopped after pressure of course there was swelling and ice applied. No sign of concussion; how long do I need to monitor him. this happened 4 hrs ago. I am getting tired and I do not want to NOT check on him but I have my alarm set to check up on him. How often should I wake up to check on him..
You should get an X-ray and MRI/CT done even if he is fine to rule out any internal injury. Do not give him sedatives. If the cut is not deep, he may not need stitches, no worries. You should keep him under observation at least 48 - 72 hrs. Initially check him hourly. Your son should not be sleepy or dizzy.
If he is nauseous or vomiting or shows some other discomfort or symptoms you should rush to ER or call emergency. Give him easily digestible semi solid food like oats meal, porridge, custard in small amounts, multiple times a day. Keep him well hydrated. Do not over feed him. If he is fine you can give him a course of antibiotics (Augmentin) for faster healing of the cut, do not let it get infected.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
