Are Stomach Cramps Suggestive Of IBS Or Lactose Intolerance?

I have a history of IBS, however I have been experiencing stronger stomach cramps recently but only after dinner. For the past two nights I have also experienced an upset stomach after drinking a large glass of milk. Could this suggest a lactose intolerance, rather than IBS?

Hi,

I understand your concerns.

1. Stomach cramps only after dinner could be due to IBS. However, upper endoscopy is advised to rule out gastritis/GERD.

2. Experiencing upset stomach after drinking a large glass of milk might be also related to GERD/gastritis. To rule out lactose intolerance, I advise to run the intolerance testing.

3. For the moment, I advise to:
- eat often and small portions
- avoid laying down/going to bed immediately after having your meal; especially when it comes to dinner (have your dinner at least 4 hours before going to bed)
- raise your head when sleeping
- avoid foods that would aggravate your symptoms: chilly, spicy, coffee, etc.
- start taking antacids after meal and PPIs in the morning

Hope it was of help!
