Are Sore Breasts And Fatigue Withdrawal Symptoms Of Depo Provera Shot?

hi, last year around November i had a surgical abortion and got the depo shot, few days later i had unprotected sex using the withdrawal method. i took a pregnancy test twice 5 weeks later and it was a really faint positive, i then took another one a week later and it was negative,i got what seemed to be my periods in the 6th weeks for 7 days and i got it again in January. i haven t had pregnancy symptoms that i had with my previous pregnancies but i am worried. i don t know if im pregnant or suffering from depo withdrawal. i have not gone for my second shot because ive been having all sorts of pregnancy symptoms like sore breasts and sometimes fatigue and headaches. what could be the problem?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for the query. I understand your concern.
Depo shot is a long acting hormonal contraceptive & is known to cause irregular or absent periods/ sore breasts.
After withdrawal the side effects persists for few months & it takes 4-6 months for complete recovery from the hormonal dose received through injections & thereafter the menses come back to normal pattern.
So don't worry. You don't seem to be pregnant at the moment, but keep using barrier contraceptive till you start getting normal regular cycle...
You can plan a baby after this.
Thanks.
