Are Persistent Sore Throat And Loss Of Voice Suggestive Of Laryngitis?

I have had a severe sore throat for five days. I went to the doctor who issued a rapid strep test and 24hour test, and the rapid came back negative, but she believed my symptoms were strep so she gave me amoxicillin. Today I found out that the 24hour test also came back negative. I'm still in pain after 4 days on amoxicillin and have almost completely lost my voice. Could it be laryngitis rather than strep?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of persistent sore throat and loss of voice which are pointing towards a condition known as known as laryngopharyngeal reflux i.e acidic content of esophagus comes backward and cause problem like hoarseness of voice. It could be due to laryngitis. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to :

- Avoid spicy and heavy meals specially during night.

- Do warms aline gargles and keeps on sipping warm water.

- Avoid taking cold beverages.

- Eat at least one hour before going to bed.

- Take antacid like gelusil.

Consult gastroenterologist/ ENT specialist for proper diagnosis. Doctor may order certain tests like X-ray of upper respiratory tract and endoscopy . Doctor may prescribe drugs like ranitidine and omeprazole along with antibiotics.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
