Are Muscle Weakness And Tendon Rupture Side Effects Of Levofloxacin?

Worried about side effects of lovofloxacin - muscle weakness, tendon rupture. Had gallbladder surgery 3 days ago - being treated for a possible uti. Reviews I ve read on this drug are concerning. Would prefer a safer antibiotic to treat this possible uti. Any recommendations?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Tendon rupture and muscle weakness are side effects of levofloxacin. These side effects are seen in children and very rare in adults. Levofloxacin is a safe antibiotic. If you are so worried about tendon rupture then you can take cephalexin or cefixime or azithromycin. But no antibiotic is free from side effects.
1.     Drink 4 – 5 liters of uncontaminated water
2.     Continue levofloxacin as suggested
3.     Syrup alkaline citrate 2 teaspoonful three times daily for 1 week
4.     Investigations – routine examination of urine, culture & sensitivity of urine
5.     Drink fruit juice and cranberry juice
6.     Do not hold your urine. Urinate when you feel
