Are Muscle Twitches Related To Anemia? How To Stop Them?

I have frequent and almost constant multiple muscle twitches, sometimes so much that I cannot sleep. Is this related to my anemia? It is WAY more than normal, as far as I can tell. What can I do to stop it? I am not an athlete, so I do not think it is due to my muscles being over-tired, and it happens whether or not I am stressed, so I don't think it'd due to just that either.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

There is no direct correlation between anemia and muscle twitches. Muscle twitches are caused by our muscles tightening up ("contracting") involuntarily — in other words, when we're not actually controlling them.

Muscle twitches can happen for lots of reasons, like stress, too much caffeine, a poor diet, exercise, or as a side effect of some medications.

Although most twitches go away in a few days and are nothing to worry about, some twitches can be caused by nerve problems or other medical conditions. Let your doctor know if:
• you have a twitch that doesn't go away
• you notice weakness, tingling, or numbness in the area where you get muscle twitches
• it looks like the muscle is getting smaller
Getting enough sleep, avoiding too much caffeine, and eating healthy foods (like lots of fruits and vegetables), can help prevent some muscle twitches.

If your symptoms are not resolving with the above measures, consult a Neurophysician for further workup and management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
