Are Irregular Menstrual Periods A Symptom Of Hypothyroidism?

Dear Doctor, I have a marginal hypothyroidism. I had menstrual cramps three days ago but they went away. I had my period due on 6th September, but for the last few months my periods have been irregular. I got a check up for my hypothyroidism n the doc said that the irregularity is most probably due to the thyroid condition, and even I know that it s a symptom. I am having vaginal discharge of white , thin and curd-like texture. Sometimes when I am working really hard or haven t tested I have a strong ammoniacal stench from my urine. Can u please help me with this ? Should I be concerned abt the periods, although I have had 8 days late periods earlier?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, your irregular periods could be due to Hypothyroidism. Low thyroid hormone causes increase in prolactin levels and slows the detoxification of estrogen which in turn leads to suppression of ovulation. It also increases insulin sensitivity which may lead to PCOS.
I would suggest you to check for TSH, T3 and T4 levels and also anti TPO antibodies.
