Are Gallstones Fatal When Gallbladder Is Not Removed?

If you do not have your gallbladder removed when you have gall stones can it possibly kill you? I had mine removed 2 years ago. But my mom spent 2 days in the emergency room with hers and she was told she needed to have it removed but she refuses to do it. I just worry that it could possibly kill her if it is not removed. PLEASE HELP!!!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
You didn't mention the age of your mother as well as her general condition.
Now read this carefully and you will get the answer:
Once a patient has had GALL-STONE colic, no question arises as to the treatment that should be recommended : it is CHOLECYSTECTOMY ( removal of gall bladder ) , unless the patient is very old or otherwise enfeebled, when cholecystostomy may be substituted .
In few cases of gall stone it may turn into gall bladder cancer , why , exact etiology is not known . So if your mother is good in condition then please get in surgery .
Hope this will help you.
