Are Flu-like Symptoms, Bumps On Genitals And Cold Sore Signs Of Herpes?

Hello, I found out today that I tested positive for Herpes. I had not had sex for about 8 mo. and have taken std test that were negative within the past few months. However, this past week I began a sexual relationship with a new person. Two days later, I woke up feeling flu-like symptoms, small bumps on my genitals and a cold sore on my lip (which i have never had before previously). Is it safe to assume that I caught herpes from this most recent intercourse?

Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic

Your history seems to suggest that it is very likely that your herpes was acquired from the most recent sexual encounter.
Flu-like symptoms are part of the prodrome of herpes, specially if it is a new (primary)infection.
Incubation period of herpes is short (2-5 days) and it starts as fluid filled bumps that may soon rupture to form well defined erosions; pain, burning sensation, burning micturation being part of the episode.
Herpes is a localized infection. The infection stays where it was first acquired. The same herpes virus may affect genital as well as oral/labial mucosa depending on the type of sexual contact that you had (oral or genital or both).
