Are Delayed Periods Normal While On Birth Control Pills?

Started taking ortho immediately after being prescribed, right around Christmas time. Was not having sex so didn t take at a precise time each day. Also forgot to take a cpl days in a row. About two weeks into cycle, started having heavy bleeding that lasted 9 days. Coincidently it started at the same time of my period was due but found it odd that it lasted for so long (normally 4-5 days tops). A week after the bleeding stopped my boyfriend and I had sex. After active pills finished I stopped taking the pill altogether. Now I am 9 days late (based on first day I started bleeding). Have checked thoroughly online for other people who experienced bleeding 2 weeks into cycle, 9 days of fake period , and 9 days late without any luck. Is this normal?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear
Understand your concern.
Delayed period is not normal while you are on the birth controls pill.
Generally period become regular due to OCP.

You should check for pregnancy test by Urinary HCG kit or by Blood HCG level.

Following are the other reasons for late periods.
1. High level of stress
2. Change in life style
3. Late ovulation
4. Excessive exercise
5. Drugs: Birth control pills, tyroid medication, Excessive tea and caffeine
6. Thyroid problem
7. Hormonal imbalance

Do regular walking and exercise.
Eat healthy diet
Eat fruits like papaya, orange,, water melon and pomegranate.
Avoid stress

Also note that
Menstruation required co ordinate action of various hormone that secreted by ovary (estrogen and progesterone) and brain (FSH and LH).
If any above hormone is decreased or increased there is imbalance in menstruation.
So please do full hormonal profile : Estrogen, progestron, LH, FSH, HCG and thyroid hormone.
That help to diagnose hormonal imbalance.
After confirmation you can take treatment according So please go ahead.

Hope this may help you
All the best.
Stay healthy.

Best regards
Dr. Sagar
